The Area 12 test fishing results indicate that the 2022 run-size through Johnstone Strait (JST) is in excess of one million fish, somewhat greater than in 2021 and above the threshold when commercial.

Campbell River fishing report. 7/1/2020 Happy Canada day! Only 14 more days until we can keep a Chinook salmon! This season we have to release any fish above 80cm or 31.5 inch long from July15-Aug31. This size is usually 17-18LB, I did have one fat fish last year that tipped the scales @ 20LB below the 80cm limit!!

Please check your area regulations on maximum weights and what kind of hooks are allowed; for instance, Campbell River Fishing Pier allows 6-oz maximum weights and single barbless hooks. Single barbless 5/0 to 7/0 hooks are standard for fishing for salmon in the ocean. A 1.5-oz to 3-oz jig weight will do fine for most piers and shorelines.

Five hour trips are possible now. The bite has been on only one slow day but the fish are here. A lot of locals are getting out as well. I counted about 70 boats the one day. It's good to see when the bite is on multiple hook ups on different boats you know it's only a matter of time before your rods go off. More charters coming this week.
